Probably the greatest performence in both these actors careers. Every detail is captivating and enthralling, which is commendable for a cast of 2.

Good movie....felt more like a broadway play. Shit...just noticed it WAS an award winning play! Too funny. My nephew recommended it....now I'm worried about him and wondering why he liked it so much.

A simple tale centered almost entirely around two people, a mother and her daughter. The mother is a clueless character, played excellently by Bancroft. She's childlike and naive to what is going on in her world. Her daughter (played equally well by the consistent Spacek) is a woman who has been freed from her lifelong depression, after a failed marriage and issues with her troublesome son, as she has decided now is the time to end her life, on her terms. As the movie unfolds, we steadily grow closer to the realistic characters, one plagued by a life of woes. Surprisingly, there's a lot of charm to this depressing movie as both characters open up to one another for probably the first time in their lives. They truly connect, its just a shame it takes the death of one of the characters for that to occur.

I was a fan of the original play and this is a marvelous film adaptation. Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft are both wonderful in their roles. The script follows the original pretty closely, so the dialogue is well-done. With a premise that toes the line between tragic and very darkly comic, it would be easy to lose the overarching story to either melodrama or unintentional humor. However, this film does neither. It's a moving, heartbreaking story. Very good adaptation of one of my favorite plays.
