A young couple engage in a suicide pact, and slit their wrists together. However, only the woman, who is already suffering from cancer, dies. Three donors give her lover a life-saving blood transfusion. Each of the three has a rare blood type, and each has his, or her, own secrets. The trio become a target for the girl's vengeful spirit. Before matters are set right, the three victims will have been forced to donate far more than their blood.

Before becoming a Johnnie To-endorsed filmfest celeb, Soi Cheang Pou-Soi was busy making a bunch of horror movies of various quality. In New Blood, featuring Niki Chow and a couple of no names, the usual hilariousness that HK directors often find compatible with ghosts and spirits is completely absent, as Cheang plays it straight for better or for worse. Since Cheang knows the tricks of the trade pretty well, New Blood is a competent work but seldom surprising and never genuinely creepy. There is a DIY-aspect to the film that I'm quite sympathetic too, however, and sometimes just sheer enthusiasm is worth all respect.

Sentimenti contrastanti relativamente a questo film: da un lato va riconosciuto che i primi 70 minuti, pur non proponendo nulla di effettivamente nuovo, sono davvero efficaci e volano rapidamente, anche grazie alle intriganti scelte visive del regista; purtroppo perÃ² non si puÃ² non notare come gli ultimi 20 minuti siano una totale forzatura atta ad infilare un plot twist di cui non si sentiva assolutamente la necessitÃ e che Ã¨ piuttosto debole. Personalmente l'ho guardato volentieri, solo la scena presso gli scavi archeologici vale il prezzo del biglietto e le scelte registiche sono valide, sia nelle riprese che nell'utilizzo dell'audio. Certo bisogna chiudere un occhio sulla sceneggiatura e sull'originalitÃ , ma dipende da quel che uno cerca...
