So, why are so few films that capture the nature of Jesus Christ accurately? Let's throw away the fact that the Hollywood stamp, false rumors and flat, hipocrytical and inaccurate characters are always present. Also, let's exclude the religious fanatics with a narrow-minded perspective. Buñuel always exalted religion and destroyed the Catholic Church as the monstrous, almost bourgeois human institution it always represented throughout the centuries. Nazarín is shown as a modernist Christ, and through the surreal and experimental, neorealist scope of Buñuel, this testament is innovation in avant-garde storytelling. It's a more conventional film by this giant auteur, but words won't suffice for describing the genius, accuracy and originality of divinity and faith seen through the eyes of a vulnerable man, featuring one of the most grandiose catharsis ever put to celluloid. 99/100

This is my favorite Bunuel film. Is perfect from the story to the photography. The panoramic shots have father Nazario like a perception of their moves, even if he isn't the panoramic character. The allegory of Jesus is made from a modern western way of thinking. In the nihilistic side is like El, when the humans fight with their ambitions, not for them. Good ideas from European philosophy are portrayed by Bunuel. Nietzsce said that there was only one treu Christian, and he died on the cross. This idea is followed and become a leitmotif. In the last scene of the movie an old woman by the road gives him a pineapple as charity. The pineapple is a sexual symbol and the fact that Nazario accept it the proof that he doesn't care anymore about his soul and going to heaven. There is no good or evil. There is just a circle and the absurd give you everything, but in the final you see that your solitude is everything and you don't have nothing, not even yourself. On the intellectual side the movie is more or less disturbing, but is definitely a masterpiece!

"Nazarin" es la cumbre de la etapa mexicana de Luis Bunuel y un profundo comentario sobre la moral y los fundamentos del Cristianismo. Es una experiencia mistica que aleja al cine de la literatura y convierte al septimo arte en una forma de expresion artistica individual. No exagero... "Nazarin" es, como diria Jodorowsky, toda una experiencia mistica.

this film is the only not surreal bunuel film that I've watched. I mean, this can happen for real. You know, the priest that gives everything to beggars, rascals. The priest that cures a stabbed whore, and then is thrown out of the Catholic Church, then he wanders around the Mexican Country, and people believe he is a miracle man. By the way, the priest is performed by a former electrician. So, next time you call an electrician, be very kind to him. He could be a disguised Jesus Christ

Bunuel was an atheist, so it's interesting he managed to make one of the most spiritual films I have ever seen.
