The film is beautiful, with all Builuel's peculiar sensuality in the face of things, which he can make, like faces, extraordinary and eloquent, ceaselessly expregsive and pregnant with this or that.

this film is the only not surreal bunuel film that I've watched. I mean, this can happen for real. You know, the priest that gives everything to beggars, rascals. The priest that cures a stabbed whore, and then is thrown out of the Catholic Church, then he wanders around the Mexican Country, and people believe he is a miracle man. By the way, the priest is performed by a former electrician. So, next time you call an electrician, be very kind to him. He could be a disguised Jesus Christ

Primera de las dos Ãºnicas obras de Benito PÃ©rez GaldÃ³s que BuÃ±uel pudo llevar a la pantalla. El tÃtulo apela al protagonista, un convencido cura de pueblo que ha decidido llevar en vida y de manera consciente todas las creencias religiosas enseÃ±adas por Cristo. Sin embargo, la propia religiÃ³n ademÃ¡s de la naturaleza humana, le mostrarÃ¡n al piadoso misionero -el gran Paco Rabal- que no hay cabida en el mundo moderno para el cristianismo puro. No se trata de una reivindicaciÃ³n del cineasta ateo por excelencia, sino por el contrario, es la mÃ¡s sutil de las crÃticas que pudo hacer al dogma impenetrable e intransigente de la religiÃ³n catÃ³lica.

Narra las aventuras de un padre que buscando ser congruente con sus creencias, practica activamente el principio de ayudar a los demás, sin ambiciones materiales y dando y recibiendo caridad... a través de esta puesta, descubrimos como los principios de bondad son contrarios con la iglesia, y como aplicados sin condición, fiel a sus principios, se ve envuelto en una serie de complicaciones.
