Young Violetta and her mother Hannah are a peculiar couple. Ten-year-old Violetta lives a quiet life with her grandmother, while her mother Hannah is an unpredictable photographer who lives off of the generosity of others. Quite disturbing for the most part, and really fully engaging thoughout. Not soemthing I would recommend to anyone though.

Eva Ionesco faces a real challenge in bringing this very personal story to the screen: How to make a movie about the exploitation and sexualized abuse of a child to the screen without exploiting or abusing the child actor? She almost manages to succeed. I'd rather a filmmaker err on the side of caution to avoid exploiting a child actor -- and that is what Ionesco has done. Sadly, the film is missing the bitter bite it needs. Isabelle Huppert is brilliant in the role and saves the film from failing. When she instructs her daughter to look into her camera as if looking into the evil of Hell -- it is truly chilling. No masterpiece, but worth seeing.

Un film pour le moins Ã (C)trange mais trÃ¨s rÃ (C)ussi. La jeune actrice est formidable notamment dans les scÃ¨nes de photo. Le film est bien rÃ (C)alisÃ (C), cohÃ (C)rent bien que l'on Ã (C)volue dans l'univers dÃ (C)lirant de la mÃ¨re. La seule faiblesse du film c'est Isabelle Huppert. Il faut beaucoup de temps pour s'adapter et voir le personnage et non pas l'actrice. On a l'impression d'Ãªtre devant "ma mÃ¨re" de C HonorÃ (C). Certes le sujet est proche, mais cette mÃ¨re la est trÃ¨s diffÃ (C)rente; exaltÃ (C) aimante et ne pouvait pas s'exprimer avec la mÃªme intonation dÃ (C)tachÃ (C) et froide
