The first hour was long-winded: sadly, I see no two ways about that. I wish it had been condensed, or even elided. However, once the movie got into its stride, it was an incredible movie. Laughton somehow made his Blight both monstrous and sympathetic, a combination that is highly quixotic. Gable, at his peak in the 30s, of course delivered a tour de force, and the supporting cast was each so memorable, that unlike many movies of the era with a large cast, I had little trouble telling characters apart. If only they could do something about that first hour...

Quite good for a 1930s movie. Usually I do not like movies this old, but this one had a really good story, and the black and white did not distract from it.

Charles Laughton is great in this one. It's my favorite version of this story.

this is a great movie for all you sea loving creatures. the dialogue is quick and witty, with great lines like "our britches are high, but out spirits are higher". its a great adventure story. one of the best parts is how ridiculous the portrayal of the "natives" is, and in the DVD we watched there was a 15 minutes additional piece about pitcairn island today (being around the 1960s), which was horrendously funny, for all the wrong reasons. Definitely recommend this one!
