Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. (1999)

Documentary filmmaker Errol Morris investigates the case of a man who became an authority on capital punishment, but was discredited when he got involved on the wrong side of a court case. Leuchter, a meek man whose appearance belies his grim expertise, develops what he says is a more effective electric chair. Before long, he's in demand from officials who want his opinions on other execution methods. But when called to aid the case of an accused Holocaust denier, Leuchter's problems begin.

(Morris's) strangest and most disturbing portrait yet.

An apt title: you see Fred rise, and then you seem him come crashing down, as advertised. A well intentioned fool becomes an unamiable martyr for a cause he doesn't seem to comprehend - that's life, that's entertainment.

A fascinating documentary with several layers - it's an intriguing historical document, it's a document about the psychology of Capital Punishment, about the obsession and desperation of "professional" holocaust deniers, and a psychological document of one man's loneliness, and his desire to be accepted into a group at any price. Dark, disturbing and fascinating.

A bizarre documentary about the worship of technique and the dangers of self-delusion.

Amazing look at an outsider, and the choices he makes to be accepted, no matter by whom. Disturbing and sad, this is a truly great film about lonliness and what it drives people to do.
