The Central Park Five (2012)

In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem were arrested and later convicted of raping a white woman in New York City's Central Park. They spent between 6 and 13 years in prison before a serial rapist confessed that he alone had committed the crime, leading to their convictions being overturned. Set against a backdrop of a decaying city beset by violence and racial tension, this is the story of that horrific crime, the rush to judgment by the police, a media clamoring for sensational stories and an outraged public, and the five lives upended by this miscarriage of justice.

Another horrifying movie..... One of the most intriguing documentaries I have seen. Did make feel ashamed of being a native New Yorker.

A must see film... harrowing account of injustice on five innocent teenagers with no prior arrest records. The city of NY, justice system, prosecutors Linda Fairstein (currently writing crime novels) and Elizabeth Lederer (currently teaching at Columbia Law School), and those like Donald Trump need to be held criminally liable/accountable. The true criminals were these people, not the Central Park Five.

Riveting would be the word I would use to describe this documentary. When I heard Ken Burns was involved, I immediately wanted to see it. Fortunately, our local theater had a special screening otherwise it would not have been shown in our area. Shortly after seeing the film, I attended a lecture featuring Michelle Alexander author of the book "The New Jim Crow." Her speaking about mass incarceration of minority youths coupled with the true story behind Central Park Five would give anyone pause if asked to evaluate our criminal justice system.

See this important, engaging documentary as soon as you can. It tells the story of 5 men wrongly imprisoned and makes you consider how this could have happened- and whether it could happen again. Hopefully the Central Park Five helps bring some healing and justice to these 5 men, their families and the city.

Documentary detailing the wrongful conviction of five inner city youths by yet another set of law enforcement officers who's quest for results out stripped the need for justice. The picture is very well put together with great contributions from those involved and a powerful sense of time and place through a range of well sourced media.
