Apparently this movie was bashed by all but one of the official critics. If you read their reviews you will notice that they don't address any aspect of the quality of the movie itself. Their views are too politicized where they try to play this movie off as showing blacks as subservient or how the black guy shows the white people how to live life. Let me say it right now, this movie is about neither of those things. The character of Mr. Church was not forced to do anything for the family he was working for. In fact, once the money runs out, you will find that he was secretly providing for the family all along because he saw them as friends and his own family. Put simply, this movie is about person that just happens to be black (since his whole backstory is race agnostic) who ends up loving his new family and they in turn end up loving him as a family member.

hmm I wonder what about this movie makes it "unbelievable" "dehumanizing" or "repugnant"? Just watched it with my wife. A great movie. And 80+ % of audiences seem to agree. However, since many won't even go watch this movie, that's more like 50% as with anything else along these lines these days.

Please ignore the critics and see this movie. You will not regret it. Unlike most movies that come out today, this one will leave you feeling good. It's just a story that develops between a girl and a man hired to cook for her and her dying mother. Truly uplifting.

This is a family film that poses the question, "What is family?" It also asks, when does work become a labor of love? It also changed my thinking about grief. Well written script with understated characters, about how one man who thought he had failed to walk in his minister father's footsteps impacts many with his musical and culinary gifts. Mr. Church is an allegory about how one man impacting one family can impact a community; perhaps what the church should be. There is serious exploration of grief and recovery and the impact on children when a parent has cancer. The film also deftly, realistically, demonstrates how bridges and friendships were built across socioeconomic lines drawn in the 1970s. As with any period film, one has to view the characters as having just escaped a 1950s mentality (as even the sets conjur the 50s and 30s influences) rather than see the characters through the lens of our current time. The lessons learned here will stay with you...
