It's a lovely dream that, in the end, feels too dreamlike. The director coaxes an intentionally passive performance from his daughter Marie, so that Nannerl's eventual waking to cold patriarchal reality doesn't sting as it might.

An intimate and subdued tale of suppressed talent and filial loyalty, the film builds an engaging fiction around some of the facts of Nannerl, the older sister of the famous Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart.

Thoughtful and intriguing, this speculation on the early life of Nannerl Mozart (Wolfgang's sister) eschews melodramatic feminist outrage and instead goes for a mostly quiet dramatization of the inequality that kept her from realizing her potential as a composer, which turns out to be much more effective.
