Good performance by Karloff but the film's plot is simply too slow and uninteresting to sustain our interest... Nothing suspenseful occurs until the climax and even then it is subdued. Fans of Val Lewton need only to apply.

Nicholas Musaraca's excellent cinematography contributes a number of fine effects, and there's a strange and witty aside on the invention of movies.

Creepy doings with Karloff amok in asylum.

This time around we see Karloff as an ass-kissing director of an asylum, who tries to parlay his minor amount of power into more by sucking up to the local idle rich, going so far as to use the inmates from his hospital as cheap entertainment at their parties. He clashes with a stubborn young woman, who he seeks revenge on by helping a slighted nobleman have her committed. Nice predictable fun, give it a look.

One of Val Lewton's weaker films, sluggishly paced and directed my Mark Robson. The movie never quite ignites, though it is chock full of good ideas and scattered chills. The biggest problem lies in its cast; Karloff aside, the rest of the actors are unappealingly dull, and Anna Lee fills only the pompous side of her character, never attaining a sympathetic dimension. Worse is Richard Fraser- the Quaker- whose characterization is flat as a board. However, there is enjoyment to be had, and to watch Karloff at play in an infinately gorgeous 18th century asylum is a joy. There is no doubt that even the less spectacular entries in Lewton's career are still admirable pictures.
