Mothra (1961)

Shipwreck survivors found on the presumably uninhabited Infant Island leads to a scientific expedition that discovers a surviving native population along with the Shobijin, tiny twin fairy priestesses of the island's mythical deity called Mothra. After the fairies are kidnapped by an exploitative businessman named Clark Nelson, Mothra sets out to rescue them.

I've seen a lot of Toho movies, and this is one of the best I've ever seen. It blends special effects with a good sorry, without some of the goofiness or sloppiness of the later films. This has the usual ensemble of Toho actors and the great music and effects you would come to expect. I particularly enjoyed the miniatures and the oddness of the Mothra twins. All in all, a great film!

It's one of Ishiro Honda's more entertaining post-Godzilla monster mashes (certainly better than the painfully dull Rodan), but it sort of feels like Honda's run out of anything to say. It's a charming little B-grade monster movie, and aside from the two fairies who would become a staple of any movie the titular bug is in, it's a pretty paint-by-numbers one at that. Mothra's big-screen debut doesn't hold a candle to any of her rumbles with the Big-G, nor does it have the impact of his surprisingly somber first flick.

Not only do the scientists muck about with bombs when they shouldn't, a dude sneaks off with some island fairies which really tears up Mothra! This one was a keeper, Mothra is a cool monster, and the movie has a novel feel since Mothras not on a mad tear as much as it's trying to protect the fairy twins.

Pretty entertaining, considering we had no Godzilla, just uninteresting humans reacting to tiny twin singers and giant moths. Bring on the monster bashes though.
