Mother (2010)

In the 1960s, about 3,000 Chinese orphans were sent to Inner Mongolia. In the Xilingol grassland, Qiqigema Erji adopted Chen Chen and Yu Sheng even though her husband disapproved. The children grew up as Mongolian nomads. But 20 years later, upon hearing the news that biological parents were looking for their children, Chen Chen left for Shanghai in the hope of meeting his parents. Yu Sheng finally did meet his parents and faced a choice as to where he wanted to live.

Aronofsky can be a moving, almost disorienting stylist, but he’s all blunt force trauma here.

Mother! is a disturbingly brilliant film by Darren Aronofsky with terrific performances by Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem. The religious/mother nature allegory within the film was completely unexpected but welcomed with its beautiful execution. In a way, Mother! reminds me of the creepy, unsettling nature of Kubrick's 'The Shining', focusing on the characters and the environment in which they live as a means of building tension and suspense... Definitely one of the most intense movies I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.

Yet the movie’s grasp of experience feels tenuous, trippy, and, dare one say, adolescent; if you gave an extremely bright fifteen-year-old a bag of unfamiliar herbs to smoke, and forty million dollars or so to play with, Mother! would be the result.

This movie was absolutely terrible and complete waste the audiences time. I'm not sure of what the writer and director Darren was trying to convey to the audience but it simply left everyone confused and wondering whats the point. The story line and plot were so disjointed its simply an annoyance. The characters didn't at all blend well and Jennifer Lawrence did her best given the lack of depth given to her character. I absolutely hated it and will never get that time back.

It is a very strange movie. The way the mother is treated makes you wonder how the Koreans treat each other in normal life. It is also a creepy movie, not really a thriller or horror movie, but the movie oozes an atmosphere of gloom and doom. And the ending is surprising. Recommended.
