Mother (2010)

In the 1960s, about 3,000 Chinese orphans were sent to Inner Mongolia. In the Xilingol grassland, Qiqigema Erji adopted Chen Chen and Yu Sheng even though her husband disapproved. The children grew up as Mongolian nomads. But 20 years later, upon hearing the news that biological parents were looking for their children, Chen Chen left for Shanghai in the hope of meeting his parents. Yu Sheng finally did meet his parents and faced a choice as to where he wanted to live.

As horror it is ridiculous, as comedy it is startling and hilarious, and as a machine for freaking you out it is a thing of wonder.

Phenomenal. But first, a disclaimer: You need to have an exceptional knowledge of the Bible (or at least the broad strokes) in order to 'get' this film. A stunning allegory on the nature of both the divine and humanity, the is an extendedPhenomenal. But first, a disclaimer: You need to have an exceptional knowledge of the Bible (or at least the broad strokes) in order to 'get' this film. A stunning allegory on the nature of both the divine and humanity, the is an extended metaphor that is superbly crafted and deeply unsettling. Lawrence and Bardem are magnificent, and the intimate cinematography further enhances the unfolding horror at the centre of the plot. Dripping with symbolism and layered with intertextuality and subtext, this is a thoroughly difficult yet sublime experience. The trailer is both accurate and deeply misleading at the same time, and it is horrifying but this is not a horror film. 8.

Mother! is an unparalleled achievement, entirely unprecedented and unexpected in this era of studio filmmaking.

This is a good movie after all, you either love it or you hate it. It's not meant for mainstream audiences, it should've been released for selected cinemas, but you got four big names, Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Pfeiffer, so they thought,This is a good movie after all, you either love it or you hate it.

Its dread has no resonance; it’s a hermetically sealed creep-out that turns into a fake-trippy experience. By all means, go to mother! and enjoy its roller-coaster-of-weird exhibitionism. But be afraid, very afraid, only if you’re hoping to see a movie that’s as honestly disquieting as it is showy.
