Moonrise (1948)

Stigmatized from infancy by the fate of his criminal father, a man is bruised and bullied until one night, in a fit of rage, he kills his most persistent tormentor. As the police close in around him, he makes a desperate bid for the love of the dead man's girlfriend, a schoolteacher who sees the wounded soul behind his aggression.

This is an overlooked gem from one of Hollywood's under-the-radar mavericks, and a tasty slice of small-town noir.

The story is certainly weaker than the cinematography, but the latter is a wonderful example of film-noir through a solid director.

A Noir film that adds a twist to the genre by creating an atmosphere of hope, even if the outcome still may be grim. Perhaps personal victory and dignity is whats important here.

Fine noirish drama, expertly crafted in typical fashion by Frank Borzage, with iinventive deep-shadow camera work by John L. Russell, later to photograph 'Psycho'. The overall quality of the production belies the film's low budget foundations; an 'A+' 'B' picture.

The first ten minutes of Frank Borzage's film noir are fascinating and, although the film doesn't keep up the pace, it is full of interesting ideas and camera shots.
