Yup Yup. Max Ophuls noir. Fantastic. This is some grade A filmmaking. The story is really tight. James Mason and Joan Bennett are both fantastic and the goddamn lighting is insane. Its just atmospheric and just beautiful. The crime aspect of the film is great but watching this mother go all out for the sake of her family is well done. Max Ophuls is the man.

Although it lacks a uniform pace, The Reckless Moment proves to be a gritty and nightmarish noir, which tells a story of one woman's horrible discovery and a most disastrous aftermath. When her daughter's lover is found dead, Lucia Harper hides his body, as she is sure that the person, who is responsible for the murder is her own baby girl Bea. The moment when she decided to get rid of the evidence ended up as a truly reckless one. She gets blackmailed, but she isn't able to pay. Fortunately, the man who wanted to get rich through this ordeal, Donnelly, falls in love with Lucia. Soon another man will come to visit her. However this one wouldn't be as charming and persuasive as Donnelly. A moralistic melodrama with a breathtaking performance by Joan Bennett. Great script, art direction, and nightmarish feel, strengthened by the black-and-white cinematography, add up to the suspense.

wow what a movie....i have just seen this movie 4 the 1st time n think that this is a good movie 2 watch...its got a good cast of actors/actressess throughout this movie....i think that james mason, joan bennett, geraldine brooks, henry o neill, sheppard strudwick, david blair, roy roberts play good parts/roles throughout this movie...its a good 1940's movie 2 watch...i think that the director of this classic/black n white/ noir/drama movie had done a good job of directing this movie because you never know what 2 expect throughout this movie its a great movie 2 watch

An well acted and enjoyable film. The direction is excellent and you really don't know how it is going to turn out. I recommend it with a glass of wine after a good meal!

Part "Mildred Pierce", part "Double Indemnity", part something else altogether, Max Ophuls' "The Reckless Moment" is a singular and atypical - if not particularly exceptional - noir outing that places more emphasis on sympathizing with victims of circumstance than by relishing in criminals getting their comeuppance. An accidental 'murder', possibly the titular reckless moment, goes from bad to worse for housewife Lucia Harper (the wonderful Joan Bennett) when she moves the body and ditches the weapon in order to protect her daughter who was the actual assailant. This lapse in judgment turns out to be the real reckless moment, as it pins her down at the mercy of a faceless blackmailer who holds evidence ransom via an agent played by James Mason. In an unusual turn for this type of film, the blackmailer's agent feels for and becomes attracted to Lucia, leading to strange emotional tensions that Mason and Bennett perform beautifully. An ultimately ironic and melodramatic take on a usually dark genre.
