Nice noirish murder yarn, James Mason was as reliable as ever with Joan Bennett being the maternal star, quality.

This film was quite excellent and seemed to be realistic, until James Mason's character appears to suddenly fall in love with Joan Bennett for no apparent reason. She spends the entire time whining, but since the character was like this in the novel as well, i suppose she has acted quite well! It does seem like a total cop out ending just to fit in with the 1940s melodrama, so i was rather irritated by it..however, James Mason was, as usual, briilliant and I wasn't totally bored with the film!

Taut drama with the always underrated Joan Bennett great as the panicked mother and James Mason just right as the conflicted anti-hero. Wonderfully directed by Ophuls and atmospherically shot this was updated as The Deep End with Tilda Swinton also a fine film but this has a distinct allure of its own.

Monday, March 11, 2013 (1949) The Reckless Moment SUSPENSE/ THRILLER Based on the Ladies Home Journal story "The Blank Wall" by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding starring a mother Lucia Harper (Joan Bennet) holding family together while her husband is away in Berlin. Her 17 year old daughter Bea (Geraldine Brooks) who's taking college art gets mixed up with a very seedy art dealer Darby (Shepperd Strudwick) who gets killed by accident resulting money collector Martin Donnelly(James Mason) to blackmail the mother for a specified amount money Darby owed money to otherwise personal letters would be released to the police which can link the mother's daughter to Darby's death. The movie is relevent back in it's time when cell phones/ computers as well as other gadgets didn't exist, as well as womans rights. And James Mason's role is identcal to other roles he's done such as "Odd Man Out" but it's still somewhat entertaining nevertheless despite of it's improbability of it's conclusion. 2.5 out of 4

Part "Mildred Pierce", part "Double Indemnity", part something else altogether, Max Ophuls' "The Reckless Moment" is a singular and atypical - if not particularly exceptional - noir outing that places more emphasis on sympathizing with victims of circumstance than by relishing in criminals getting their comeuppance. An accidental 'murder', possibly the titular reckless moment, goes from bad to worse for housewife Lucia Harper (the wonderful Joan Bennett) when she moves the body and ditches the weapon in order to protect her daughter who was the actual assailant. This lapse in judgment turns out to be the real reckless moment, as it pins her down at the mercy of a faceless blackmailer who holds evidence ransom via an agent played by James Mason. In an unusual turn for this type of film, the blackmailer's agent feels for and becomes attracted to Lucia, leading to strange emotional tensions that Mason and Bennett perform beautifully. An ultimately ironic and melodramatic take on a usually dark genre.
