Clever. Stillman learns all the eccentricities possible from Woody Allen (beyond the obvious geographical location) and some intellectual humor with the breath of Godard, and directs a great debut which can be easily placed some spots above Goodfellas (1990) and among the greatest efforts of the 90s in the US. 97/100

Nicely written character study. I typically don't go in for purely character driven stories but this one posses the perfect mix of empathy, classism, dry wit, and realism to draw me in. Wonderful offering from a first time writer/director. It being set in the heyday of the eighties and the inevitable down fall of Yuppie ("UHB") culture lent it a certain nostalgic appeal for me also.

Metropolitan celebrates and mourns the specific character of a place and time, youthful associations and crushes, a toolkit of values, even if those values are not exactly shared by, say, housewives in Duluth and auto mechanics in Albuquerque.
