This is quite easily my favorite movie ever.

This one is a gateway drug for people afraid of experimental film. Sexy as hell and every frame of it is so far ahead of its time that it blows your mind to think it was made in 1943. Even Deren's hair in this short is about 20 years ahead of its time. I watch this one every couple of years, the film is very cool and it is fun to think about what it all means.

Such American Cinematographers as Maya Deren are of a hand full when it comes to using an iris. She contemplates an Iliad versus Leviathan transition. The exhanging beauty of her earlier work lies within its perplexity. She carries the zeal of a master craftswoman ship when it coming the psycho-analytical existentialism of an iris. Devine Horseman has matured and seasoned. The Haiti in Voodoo combined in the Lowa by 1984 with a macabre take of African spiritualism inadvertently ripened her as an artist.

Personally, I think it NEARLY comes close to the level of Un Chien Andalou, though not as important. This short film contains some of the most raw and effective surrealism that I've ever witnessed. There are many things about this that kind of feel "made up as they went along", and there is part of it that seems like it attaches to a larger, cohesive whole, but I don't think that "thinking" about this film is as important as "feeling" this film. I won't be forgetting about this soon.

This entrancing and mesmerising experimental film by Maya Deren is a piece of art where just looking at it shows you how influential it is. The picture has clearly echoed on through more recent filmmakers such as David Lynch, and when taking into account the time it was made, the rough, low budget techniques used in order to evoke the strong feeling the film gives you is startling. A short, excellent film which I believe captures the essence of the mind and dreams like no other picture ever will.
