Meantime (1983)

A working-class family in London's East End is struggling to stay afloat during the recession under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's premiership. Only the mother Mavis is working; father Frank and the couple's two sons Colin, a timid, chronically shy individual and Mark, an outspoken, headstrong young man, are on the dole. This situation is contrasted by the presence of Mavis's sister Barbara, and her husband John, whose financial and social loftiness appears to be a comfortable facade over the unspoken soreness of a lackluster marriage.

A really complete theatrical piece with great central performances. I was a little shocked and diappointed at the length of Gary Oldman's role but this was still funny, sad and compelling throughout.

An interesting and well-written early theatrical piece by Mike Leigh, and a great chance to see Tim Roth, Alfred Molina and Gary Oldman in fantastic early roles. Great for lovers of British cinema and Mike Leigh fans.

mike leigh film from the 80s dealing with typical 80s british working class life, and now notable for the actors who have gone on to great things, tim roth is really great as a withdrawn brother to older siblin played brilliantly by phil daniels, he really should havegone on to greater things after this, alfred molina as a stiff husband, and gary oldman as a skin head, shot like most leigh films, without a script, and coming from rehearsels and charactor background, a great kitchen sink drama, with great performances all round.

Another excellent Tim Roth film by Mike Leigh, this sees Roth as a somewhat mentally challenged youth living in an underclass 80's flat with family (including a good performance by Phil Daniels as brother)and how Thatcherite Britain incl. dole queueing affects their lives.
