Manderlay (2005)

In 1933, a young woman and her father discover an Alabama plantation whose inhabitants live as if slavery had never been abolished. Feeling a sense of duty to those behind the heavy gates, she stays to liberate the people and see them through their first harvest. With four of her father's colleagues and a lawyer, she faces the daunting task of resurrecting the place known as Manderlay.

Manderlay is an intellectually invigorating analysis of race, class, power and democracy, all while remaining a thoroughly enjoyable (if harrowing) film.

i had never seen any of lars von trier's work before this piece. it was interesting. i haven't had a movie shock me in a while and this one did just that. i really want to have someone to discuss some of the ideas he puts out in this, great conversation fuel. (heads up - bit of nudity, and multiple graphic sex related scenes)

All I really need to say is Lars von Trier. He wrote and directed it, so what can you expect other then a masterpiece? This is the follow up to Dogville, and has left me eagerly waiting the final installment of the series in Wasington. Bryce Dallas Howard shows just how good she can be.
