Making Contact (1985)

A nine year old boy named Joey, who after the tragic death of his father, begins to experience psychic powers such as allowing him to move inanimate objects with his mind, set things on fire, and even communicate with his dead father. However, not everything is good for Joey as his newly gained powers accidentally awake an evil supernatural force that is contained inside the body of an old ventriloquist's dummy that Joey found in an abandoned house. The supernatural Dummy shows similar powers to Joey's, and soon he puts the lives of everyone near Joey in danger as the evil Dummy has dark plans for Joey's special powers.

I rented this because I remembered that I saw it as a kid and that it deeply disturbed me. And you know what? It still does. The thing is though, I'm not really sure that that's what it was going for. It's directed like it's some sort of whimsical Spielbergesque children's fantasy, but it really has some pretty disturbing undertones. And a scary looking evil ventriloquist dummy, which alone will automatically add a scare factor to any movie. Thanks for a lifetime of nightmares, Roland Emmerich, You sick bastard!

My #1 childhood trauma film. This movie really really scared me. I finally found a copy years later, and it is a mess of a film, extremely derivative, and ridiculous. The first third is actually effective and creepy. The last 10 minutes are near unwatchable.
