A moving (and depressing) story of how we treat our aging parents, the perfect thing to guilt you up. You could call this an American version of Tokyo Story, and I'd be surprised if it wasn't an influence on Ozu. Other than the wonderful performances by Victor Moore and Beulah Bondi, there's nothing spectacular about the film, but it is very realistic, honest, and sensitive. The ending is one of the most touching scenes I've witnessed for some time, it certainly brought a tear to my eye.

It's sad but it needs to be said. Makes me want to see Tokyo story now.

Loved this movie~ A movie that concepts are timeless even though the time period isn't. With the elderly living longer, and not being able to afford staying in their home it is likely couples may have to separate. Make Way Tomorrow truly depicts all the issues that may occur with living with a parent. ??

The most convincing love story ever put on screen.

If you're familiar with Leo McCarey, you might not suspect a film like this from him. Let me say that it is a thoughtful and well made film. The film is an examination of old age and how the elderly are tossed aside. The film tells the story of an elderly couple who are force to split up because they have no money to live together anymore. The film follows them as they live with their ungrateful children and then in the second half the couple go out on the town together, for one last hurrah. It is for sure a tearjerker, and I defy you not to get a little weepy during the film. The last third of the film is as bitter sweet as you can get. A mature and well crafted drama.
