Devastating. Veteran Hollywood director Leo McCarey wields his considerable comic skills to this, a profoundly sad film about the fate of an aged couple. Every scene is finely crafted and honed like a polished gem, and if it were all about skill, this would be a tremendous film...but to that skill McCarey invests a lifetime of knowledge about human nature, the way we treat one another either humanely or inhumanely, and the results are on another level entirely: tragedy made razor sharp, or comedy with the impact of a shotgun blast to the kneecap. If I'm being vague with the details, that's deliberate--see this movie cold, then try deal with it by reading any number of fine articles written on the subject (Tag Gallagher's being one of the best). Need I say it? Great film.

A touching tale of an elderly couple who lose their homes and are split up among their adult kids, placed into two different regions of the United States, during the Great Depression. It is quite a sad film, documenting the double loss for the old couple of everything, including one another. It is quite a sad film, that does progress at quite a slow, furfilling pace. I found that the actors spoke very slowly, but perhaps that may have added to the nice quality of the film. Quite a depressing movie, with a disgheartening plotline.

I'm not a fan of when a movie stacks the deck so much on one side that it is forcing you to feel only one way, avoiding any nuance to the story, but that said, this is a true enough tale that has a lot of feeling, even if it feels forced at times in its telling. It's sad and melancholy for sure and would be a good movie to use if someone needed to know what a weepie was.

A sadly forgotten film and one of the saddest films you'll ever see.
