Macario (1960)

Poor, hungry peasant Macario longs for just one good meal on the Day of the Dead. After his wife cooks a turkey for him, he meets three apparitions, the Devil, God, and Death. Each asks him to share his turkey, but he refuses all except Death. In return, Death gives him a bottle of water which will heal any illness. Soon, Macario is more wealthy than the village doctor, which draws the attention of the feared Inquisition.

Macario is by far one of my favorite foreign films. Has a great story and explains how well a person can be with a gift to heal the people.

ES UNA MUY BUENA PELICULA, VIEJITA ESO SI, PERO ESTUPENDA. TUVE LA OPORTUNIDAD DE VER UNA PUESTA EN ESCENA CON EL SR. LOPEZ TARSO Y DESDE ENTONCES QUISE VER LA CINTA. ESTA FENOMENAL SOBRE TODO LA HISTORIA.

If Ugetsu and Seventh Seal had a Catholic baby in Mexico it would be this film! It's shot by Gabriel Figuroa, the acclaimed cinematographer of Mexico's Golden Era, and it's just beautiful. Its mood is closer to Ugetsu, but the main character is far more endearing. This film deals with class and spirituality in a really interesting way. I wish this film got more attention and acclaim.
