The first part of this documentary is interesting and fun, but skip the second half as it's bog down into the director's take on what he thinks other directors have interpreted LA to be.

An academic exercise that, while somewhat entertaining to watch, is probably only truly worth watching if you're actually a resident of Los Angeles. The film also felt like I was sitting through a 3 hour film lecture, and while it was informative, I'm not sure I really cared all that much.

What gives Los Angeles Plays Itself its extraordinary density is the way Andersen transforms a cliché into a metaphysical truth that encompasses far more than L.A.

With its epic length and academic narration, Los Angeles Plays Itself, an essay film on how Los Angeles is portrayed in the films it makes, won't appeal to all tastes. However, those willing to commit will find one of the best educational films ever made, serving as an insightful examination on how the history and perception of Los Angeles (or "L.A.") can be deciphered from movies ranging from The Exiles to Night of the Comet to works of gay porn like L.A. Plays Itself, which this film takes its name from. Some of Andersen's observations may be a tad specious, but they're mostly thought provoking and often spot on. And I think one can watch it in two parts without losing much, so why not give it a try?
