Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession (2004)

A documentary on the Z Channel, one of the first pay cable stations in the US, and its programming chief, Jerry Harvey. Debuting in 1974, the LA-based channel's eclectic slate of movies became a prime example of the untapped power of cable television.

I'd never even heard of Z Channel before this doc, but it was easily the greatest movie channel of all time. A wonderful, well rounded, and interesting documentary about a dude who loved movies of all kinds, programmed a channel with all the movies he thought were good, whether they made money at the box office or not, and then for no apparent reason, killed his wife and himself.

Channel Z was a US cable channel back in the day which showed a wide variety of movies with no commercials. Everything from foreign to 6 hour movies to erotica to star wars. The story behind the channel is shocking.

An excellent documentary of the rise and fall of the Z Channel, pay per view that beat out HBO and Showtime in providing classic movies without commercials, something unprecedented at the time.

What makes this film awesome is not only the amazing story that it tells but also the movies that it clued me into. As I was watching it, I kept having to pause, look a movie up on Netflix and add it to my queue, and that is awesome!
