Lonesome Jim (2005)

After failing to find success as a writer in New York City, Jim slinks back to his family's home in the Midwest to lick his wounds. But his visit is quickly complicated when his angst spreads to his brother, Tim, who promptly decides to drive his car straight into a tree. Under the shadow of his sibling's injurious actions, Jim strikes up an unlikely friendship with Anika, whose centered small-town wisdom gradually rubs off on him.

great movie yet it had an edge i wasn't used to. Also, may cause depression

A slow paced indie gem set in small town America, this character study of a miserable and self obsessed man is a chance to see that Casey Affleck is one of the greatest actors around. Arrogant and selfish but with enough depth that he still manages to come across as likeable and endearing. The way he treats people is pretty awful too, this especially true of the way he talks to his mother. There is no doubt that this is a special film full of quirks and funny side plots and it's a shame the running time is so short. The basketball sub plot is one such side story that is especially funny and heart warming. All in all this is practically faultless film making by Buscemi which shows what can be done with a tiny budget.

Great film that you'll love if you don't mind bleak reality style films. You aren't gonna get any crazy action or ridiculous comedic situations... just a slice of life into a dysfunctional family and primarily into the life of a 28 year old depressed and unmoved dude. I found it funny at times, extremely sad, and in the end uplifting in a very relatable way. There is just something rewarding about watching a film that is grounded in "everyday-ness" so much. Buscemi really did a good job directing... and Casey Affleck is great as the monotone Jim. Worth a rental.

A lovely little downbeat film from Buscemi that has a lot in common with his own Trees Lounge. Add in a little Jersey Girl and Garden State and you know what sort of film you're in for. Casey proves again what a decent actor he was before his attention grabbing Gone Baby Gone/Assassination double bill. The film also contains some really nice supporting turns, Boone Junior and Kay Place in particular.
