Lonesome Jim (2005)

After failing to find success as a writer in New York City, Jim slinks back to his family's home in the Midwest to lick his wounds. Suprisingly good. This movie si wonderful because the characters are wonderfully human and flawed.

While many will find it depressing, I think it is because it is a story so blatantly honest to life. People fail. Nobody wants to hear it, but it's true. Persistent failure is depressing, and as Jim tries to escape such depression through apathy, he lives in a world of stagnation and apathy. The film shows us the process of escaping this, and even if it isn't wholly realized, there is hope. Casey Affleck is a despicable antihero, but somehow, we sympathize. A number of fantastic laugh out loud moments ease the story along through its otherwise sullen journey, and they too make it worth it.

Excellent! Brilliant understated performance from Casey Affleck (puts his brother to shame). 'Course Liv Tyler would look awesome in a deep sea diver's outfit but even so...great performances all round really. It could easily have been a really down and depressing film but the light touches of humour helped it enormously. Recommended.

This is Clerks II as an unpretentious dryly comic drama with a brain, midwestern one, and without the guy buddy relationship; awh, hell, it's just a totally different movie about me when I moved back to Indiana, and later down to Tennessee to be with my mother, who is very much like Jim's. Good work Steve. Very brave. Thanks for thinking of us midwesterners and tapping into the story of post-postmodern males of a certain 30-year-old dead end age. Thanks for the tunnel light and the hopefull possiblity of a pretty shot-knocking girl.

What a great indi film . . . so strange and random, yet so real.
