London Road (2015)

London Road is a musical drama that documents the events of 2006, when the quiet rural town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. The residents of London Road had struggled for years with frequent soliciting and kerb-crawling on their street. When a local resident was charged and then convicted of the murders, the community grappled with what it meant to be at the epicentre of this tragedy.

Not all the songs work, but when they do they chill the spine and reinforce the mood of this powerful story about ordinary people who no longer wish to live with darkness.

Even if musicals aren't your thing, you should see London Road. It is unlike anything you've ever seen. Writer Alecky Blythe has taken the speech from actual interviews she conducted about a series of murders in Ipswich in 2006. The result is a verbatim musical than manages to capture the rhythms and nuances of human speech perfectly. This is extended to the direction and choreography to create an enthralling, pulsating film. When the words and music are in sync, London Road is one of the most unique cinematic experience you're likely to have. It loses a bit of that near the end, as the rhythmic music gives way to standard speech, but what comes before is so good this barely matters.

This is a story that could be told in many different ways, but the musical approach guarantees that its participants will be heard.

I love this idea, but songs need hooks and melodies just as movies need plots and characters.

... a remarkably complex and incredibly creative look at the impact of how negative publicity affects the self-image of a town and its people and how they bond together to repair themselves and the place they call home.
