Lili (1953)

Members of a circus troupe "adopt" Lili Daurier when she finds herself stranded in a strange town. The magician who first comes to her rescue already has romantic entanglements and thinks of her as a little girl. Who can she turn to but the puppets, singing to them her troubles, forgetting that there are puppeteers? A crowd gathers around Lili as she sings. The circus has a new act. She now has a job. Will she get her heart's desire?

Cute puppets. Sweet simple story. Great color. Simple stuff. Simple fluff. Leslie Caron was much better in "Gigi" but at least this was somewhat of a hit for her. Defintely one for nostaglic minds only.

MGM's Little-Engine-That-Could, a small, one-song musical that turned into a big hit for the studio; still thought of as a children's film, although the movie has many serious overtones, it also ingeniously works in several dance numbers for Caron, as well as introducing the song standard "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo." A delight from start to finish.

When I was a little kid, every time my grandmother would take me to the video store to pick out a movie to watch, I would pick this one. I adored it, and I still adore it. I haven't seen it around anywhere to buy though--my grandma jokes that we wore out all the copies in existence. :) Anyone have any info on where to get it?

Monday, August 22, 2011 (1953) Lili FAMILY/ MUSICAL Simpleton young girl, Leslie Caron as Lili makes friends with a couple of puppets during one of those sideshows, turning the act into a successful one since Paul's (Mel Ferro)easy-to-get along persona was only shown through his puppets and not as himself as an actual person whose really grumpy because he limps! The 'Lili' song is quite a catchy tune! Quite influential, since the effects of humans interacting with puppets was popularized by such shows as Sesame Street in 1969 and in Jim Henson's The Muppets Show that started soon after in 1974! In parts of this is somewhat metaphorical because Lili was having a rapport for Paul's(Ferrer) puppets than the person behind the puppets who was strictly a business person! Unecessesary footnote: Actor Mel Ferrer married actress Leslie Caron as a result of this film! 3 out of 4
