The story of a German singer named Willie, who while working in Switzerland, falls in love with a Jewish composer named Robert, whose family is helping people to flee from the Nazis. Robert's family is skeptical of Willie, thinking she could be a Nazi as she becomes famous for singing the song "Lili Marleen".

Just got it on DVD... Lost my heart to it - again... It is social realism at its finest, set up in an almost hitchcock-like suspense theme with the impossible lovestory hanging over it. Get on dvd, take your time and let it slowly grow on you and you are in for a piece of epic directing and acting... ENJOY!!!

very hard to find in NTSC format. i have a burned englished dubb ed copy that sucks ass but at least you get to see the picture and the plot.

The meanings are banal and the pace is heavy, but Fassbinder's use of color -- as throughout his late period -- is superb.

Fassbinder's energy and imagination, in tandem creating strong, visceral images, justify and vindicate his excesses. He is, simply, one of very few directors in the world today who seems to be pouring everything he has into his medium.
