Last Woman on Earth (1960)

Harold Gern, a shady businessman from New York, is spending a holiday in Puerto Rico with his attractive wife Evelyn. They are joined by Martin Joyce, Harold's lawyer, who has come to discuss the latest indictment. Harold invites him along on a boat trip during which all three try out some newly bought scuba diving equipment. When they resurface, they find out that the world has changed forever.

A wealthy criminal, his wife and his lawyer, during a holiday in Puerto Rico find themselves the only survivors of an atmospheric catastrophe. Campy and stretched, but with some strangely interesting though undeveloped ideas. Robert Towne, a key figure of the Hollywood New Wave, wrote and starred under the name of Edward Wain.

Another decent Corman film, the title credits and the opening scene set the stage perfectly for the rest of an apocalypse story. The credits slowly pan along the painting of a womanâ??s curves, which is followed by the main characters watching a cock fight, a metaphor for the rest of the film. The character of Ev is pure sex, setting up the conflict between the two men, a story that admittedly stumbles a bit in the middle, but recovers about half way through to become something of an Antonioni-style movie, something of an interesting departure for Corman.

This movie was ok. The characters didn't really grow at all throughout the whole thing, but it had an alright story and it interested me enough to see what the outcome was going to be.

The ending is strangely religious, yet satisfying nonetheless. That pompous nihilist Martin ("I don't believe in anything. I'm too civilized.") gets what he deserves in the end.

Like most exploitation films of it's time it has an intriguing title and a poster promising a much better movie than it actually is. The first entry in Corman's so called Puerto Rico Trilogy, this film does offer an interesting premise and the involvement of Town is strangely interesting as well. However the movie lives up to it's low budget and leave any interest unfulfilled. It's about what you might expect...if you don't expect much.
