A brilliant film by French director Louis Malle that tells of a young French boy who joins the Gestapo during Germany's occupation of France. The films greatest strength is that it doesn't judge it's characters, but leaves that to the viewer. With such an approach Malle shows us that though people may do horrible things, they are not inherently evil, but simply misguided human beings caught up in a terrible situation.

A generation after WWII, Louis Malle shed light on French collaborators

Ah, this film is a bit hard to watch at time because the main character is not likeable at all. Still, its interesting to see an anti-hero as the protaganist. This is an interesting study in what a bored teenager will do to cure his boredom.

This coolly detached WWII chronicle, which is critical of the French Resistance, is one of Louis Malles' strongest and most personal films.

Lucien is a boy with need to belong into something, after being rejected French resistance he joins German police. Setting is absurd but interesting. However, Malle misses to take a full advantage of the story. Instead of actions of Lucien's career we see him lurking in one jew tailor's house trying to make friendly with him and his daughter. Nevertheless, film doesn't take it's side too clearly with I wound confusing.
