Beasts of No Nation (2015)

Based on the experiences of Agu, a child fighting in the civil war of a West African country. Follows Agu's journey as he's forced to join a group of soldiers. While he fears his commander and many of the men around him, his fledgling childhood has been brutally shattered by the war raging through his country, and he is at first torn between conflicting revulsion and fascination.

There have been war films made, but only some of them truly make you feel like you have experienced it yourself. Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan... They all have that spirit within them to tell a gritty story about what war does to someone. Beasts of No Nation sits proudly amongst those, as a film about the loss of innocence, and the horrors of violence. This is as true a contender for Best Picture as I have ever seen in the last few years, and that is really saying something. It grabs you, and doesn't let you go. Most of all, it is nothing less than a masterpiece.

this movie hit me. i believed it all, fiction or no. Abraham Attah is an incredible young actor, and the rest are so good that there are moments when you forget it is scripted, not a documentary. a window into the madness that war creates and feeds off of, with a healthy dose of psychedelia. looking forward to more work by dir. Fukunaga

This film was playing at the Midtown Art Cinema right next to my house, so I decided to go see this one in there over watching it on a small Roku TV at home, and boy was it worth my $11. However, while its flawlessly shot, powerfully acted, and brilliantly directed, this is a difficult film to watch. But, you'll be glad you did once you finish all the way through. Add it to your queue, but this isn't a Netflix and Chill movie. If you decide to, you have been warned.

Acting at its very finest, Idris Elba and Abraham Attah are simply superb
