The former famous painter Frenhofer lives quietly with his wife on a countryside residence in the French Provence. When the young artist Nicolas visits him with his girlfriend Marianne, Frenhofer decides to start again the work on a painting he long ago stopped: La Belle Noiseuse. And he wants Marianne as model.

This is a pretty intense look at the artistic process through the painting of a single portrait. Much of it takes place in the artist's studio where the camera gazes mesmerizingly at the artist's pencils and brushes and canvas but also at the nude model, played here by Emmanuelle Béart. The film clocks in at close to four hours but I found that it did not drag or feel claustrophobic since it was able to mine the relationship between the artist and his model for enough drama to keep things interesting while the work of art made its progress from the sketch book to a large canvas.

A beautiful study of the relationship between subject and object, artist and model. Nearly 4 hours - and not a moment too long!

Tiring in length, but to a great extent, that is the point. With this in mind, definitely best seen in a theater, i.e. a captive audience. If you must watch at home and want to break into two viewings, I recommend doing so at the break between the two days of painting, rather than at the intermission.
