Walter Matthau gives a compelling, Oscar-nominated performance as a grumpy old man in this melodrama, the only film star Jack Lemmon directed.

It's very interesting to see Lemmon direct for the first and only time and decide to go with Matthau rather than an aged actor. Matthau of course always looked old but here he sometimes hits the mark and other times doesn't. I wonder if the lukewarm result prompted Lemmon not to direct anything else.

Sweet movie about perspective and independence. Matthau is a retiree living w/ his son's family, ends up identifying with a teenager just getting her life together. The family values may be a bit dated, but I don't want to ruin the story. It's a sweet movie.

Though only 50 years old when he made the film, Matthau is more than convincing as the doddering Joe Kotcher...

Lovely little film raised by yet another impeccable performance from the genius that is Walter Matthau. I love this man so much, does not get wnough credit. If you are looking for a heart warming tale look no further than this sweet movie
