Kotch (1971)

When retired salesman Joseph Kotcher begins to feel pressure to move out of the house he shares with the family of his son, he opts to embark on a road trip instead of settling in a retirement home. Befriending Erica, a young pregnant woman and his grandson's former nanny, Kotch begins to finds new meaning in life as he helps her prepare to welcome her baby into the world.

Matthau plays an old man years before he actually was one. Jack Lemon's directorial debut. It's all about th echaracter Kotch and how he helps a pregnant teenager. Touching.

Didn't pass my 10 minute rule, even though I think I gave it a bit longer. The problem is that they were trying too hard. Also trying to be funny/cute and depressing at the same time. That sometimes works, but it wasn't working in the movie. The chemistry was just off.

Touching film about an aging widower (Walter Matthau) whose contentious relationship with his family won't dampen his love for his infant grandson, or stop him from striking up a friendship with a pregnant, unwed teenage girl for whom he becomes a surrogate grandfather. Jack Lemmon's only film as a director may be a bit scattershot, but with the aid of a gorgeous Marvin Hamlisch score, he goes straight for the heart. Charming in every way.
