Kings of Pastry (2009)

The collar awarded to the winners of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best Craftsman in France) is more than the ultimate recognition for every pastry chef - it is a dream and an obsession. The 3-day competition includes everything from delicate chocolates to precarious six foot sugar sculptures and requires that the chefs have extraordinary skill, nerves of steel and luck. The film follows Jacquy Pfeiffer, founder of The French Pastry School in Chicago, as he returns to France to compete against 15 of France's leading pastry chefs. The filmmakers were given first time/exclusive access to this high-stakes drama of passion, sacrifice, disappointment and joy in the quest to have President Sarkozy declare them one of the best in France.

On the obvious level it is the story of a pastry competition but it's about so much more: total dedication, mastery of your craft, ambition, complete love and pursuit of your calling. Watching these chefs you really get the idea of what it means to be so absolutely focused, to give yourself completely and utterly over to something. It helps that if you are a lover of pastries. Those beautiful little jewels that smile, lure, tempt us from behind their vitrines with the promise of pleasure and then the immediate abject guilt for having indulged to wantonly. I only wish that the execution of the documentary had more finesse. The filmmakers must have had zero budget because the film looks cheap. They would have benefitted from a better DP to really delight our senses. After all, don't we first feast with our eyes? Didn't love the music either. What does hot house jazz have to do with French pastries? Overall, I did enjoy the sneak peak into am unknown world.

Pardon my cliches, but this documentary was a feast for the eyes. I really liked how the filmmakers conveyed the personalities of the MOF candidates. That said, I thought the documentary-makers could have made sure that the presentation of the documentary was more organized. I had a hard time following the location of where some events took place.

Wonderful film about the process of becoming a MOF (a best of France chef) in pastry. Fascinating, emotional, and exciting.

As a film and a documentary, Kings of Pastry just doesn't hold up. It's certainly interesting to learn about the Meilleurs Ouvriers de France competition, but it doesn't merit a whole film. As an edited down special for an hour slot on the Food Network (it felt like a piece shot to be shown there, but a bit long), this'd be great. But as a film, it wasn't the greatest.

Heartfelt, feel-good doc about France's coveted competition to anoint the country's highest honor in patisserie delivers huge servings of emotionally wrenching drama and delicious visuals.
