King of California (2007)

Charlie gets released from an insane asylum and moves in with Miranda, the young daughter he left behind. Charlie believes that there is treasure hidden beneath the local Costco, so he puts together a plan to unearth the loot. By convincing Miranda to quit her job at McDonald's and instead work at the wholesale store, he is able to obtain a key. Although Miranda is skeptical, she helps her father with his irrational quest.

This movie was great. Evan Rachel Wood has this dreamy quality about her...I can't figure it out, but I think I'm in love, lol. Seeing Michael Douglas in this role is pretty wild. But he pulls it off great. Also tugs at your heartstrings when he pawns his prized bass in order to get his daughter's car back...after putting it up for the rent on that backhoe! I think it was a good movie all around.

I really enjoyed this movie. It's especially good if you know the stress of dealing with people who have marked mental illness. I think if I sat down and watched it all at once it might be relatively slow-moving, but I watched it in increments throughout the day, so I can't say for sure. Also, I have a total girl crush on Evan Rachel Wood after watching it.

This quirky Sundance comedy is largely carried on lead actors, Michael Douglas, and Evan Rachel Wood's, shoulders. Actors are incessantly critical to a film's success, but with a storyline as offbeat as this, miscast actors or actors who fell short of flawlessly embodying their characters, would have automatically amounted to cinematic doom. Fortunately for "King of California", Douglas and Wood are par excellence, with their absorbing, atypical father-daughter dynamic. The film failed to engage me, at moments, during the first half, but by the end had wholeheartedly won me over, with its mastered balance of comedic lightheartedness, and raw heart. Would recommend "King of California" for any fans of quirky independents, and films in the vein of "Little Miss Sunshine".
