Carefree single guy Charlie Waters rooms with two lovely prostitutes, Barbara Miller and Susan Peters, and lives to gamble. Along with his glum betting buddy, Bill Denny, Charlie sets out on a gambling streak in search of the ever-elusive big payday. While Charlie and Bill have some lucky moments, they also have to contend with serious setbacks that threaten to derail their hedonistic betting binge.

George Segal and Elliot Gould star as the gamblers who go from happy go-lucky pals to being involved in a desperate attempt to win back their money.

I am not a big Altman fan, but I am a fan of gambling films when done right and this is it. Gets gambling down perfectly with two great characters.

One of Altman's lesser-known works, but pretty damn good for all of that. Gould and Segal are two sides of the same coin: compulsive gamblers on the look-out for the next big game, incapable of quitting or of living their lives outside of gaming tables or racetracks. Gould does not shut up, keeping an ongoing dialogue going with either himself or anyone who will listen. Segal says almost nothing. Ultimately Gould seems to be the happier of the two, existing almost purely on the adrenalin of his addiction. Perhaps one of the best films about compulsion ever made.

A consistently underrated gem, that can be safely regarded, by those who know better, as the late Robert Altman's overlooked masterpiece. Though often categorized in your local video store as a drama, please do not be fooled by this naive error of judgment that over the years has quietly become a far too common misconception. California spilt is nothing short of hilarious in the realm of both downplayed subtlety, and irreverent slapstick. While all the while managing to maintain it's dignity in the process. With that said let me end by encouraging each and every one alike to view Robert Altman's California Split at-least twice, as it is, in short, just a cool flick that would never think of crapping out.

Underappreciated gem from Robert Altman. The two leads are great, particularly Gould as usual. Seek out, it's well worth it.
