Flawed parenting, ingrate children and family estrangement will never not be relevant, and the modern-day dress gave it the feel of a production at ease with itself.

Just because nobody could or should feel this is a definitive King Lear detracts only somewhat from the undeniable joy that comes from even two hours of watching Anthony Hopkins gnash his teeth, wail and go gloriously mad.

Anthony Hopkins' lead and chews the scenery down to gristle and bone....

All in all this was an excellent production. I thought that Anthony Hopkins at times was a bit over-the-top but in general Was compelling. The other actors were excellent to a man and woman. The play was shortened, but I think in a way that did not detract from the overall message, one that is powerful.
