Author: The JT LeRoy Story (2016)

New York magazine's October 2005 issue sent shockwaves through the literary world when it unmasked "it boy" wunderkind JT LeRoy, whose tough prose about his sordid childhood had captivated icons and luminaries internationally. It turned out LeRoy didn't actually exist. He was dreamed up by 40-year-old San Francisco punk rocker and phone sex operator, Laura Albert.

Your reaction to Author will come down the question that haunts the film, and assuredly Albert herself: Do the widely-praised writings of LeRoy become less praiseworthy when you know they were crafted under false pretenses? It's a question worth chewing on even if the film asking it stacks the deck.

Deeper questions about Albert's style and artistic identity are left underexplored, strange considering the film's abrupt title. Maybe there are just too many personalities in disorder for one feature film to handle.

I'm still in shock, and I'm guessing those that befriended JT LeRoy are still, too.

Animations, interviews and recordings of phone calls made at the time between Laura/JT and the various celebrities and literary figures she/he befriended flesh out the tale.
