Touches your heart if you're a first or second generation Vietnamese immigrant/child of immigrant. Light on the political overtone, heavy on the emotional conflicts that the family feels.

Journey From the Fall deserves commendation for its intelligent and nuanced account of the Vietnamese refugee experience. Kudos to Tran and his fine cast, many of whom had never acted before, for making this moving and artfully crafted film.

My dad was a marine in the SVA. He went through two years of that. I'm sorry, but he wasn't very impressed. Now that I think about it, how can a person who wasn't even there direct a genuine account of the events? A fine work of Western cinema, I agree. It even borrows from WW2 Holocaust films. But the story has got to be believable, or at least, realistic if it labels itself as historical fiction.

If you like foreign flicks, are interested in history and society, and the Vietnam War, this is a heart breaking story. One has to put up with reading sub titles though, because it's all in Vietnamese.
