While the ending to "Johnny, Belinda" is surprisingly understanding and Jane Wyman's star making and Oscar winning performance is lovely, it's still a pretty dumb movie. The way deafness is handled in the picture is quite silly, and the events (rape and murder and misunderstanding in Canada) comes out a wash. See this film for the acting and a portrait on how misunderstood conditions were handled on screen back in the 40s.

Try all you want to make yourself jaded over this, but in the end poor little Belinda wins us all over in the end.

Oh my goodness... this movie was FANTASTIC!! Jane Wyman totally deserved her Oscar for this role-- her eyes said everything. It is a film that everyone should see-- it also really brings to light how people with disabilities are treated-- even though it was over 60 years ago, the overall message of the movie still rings true today. GO SEE IT!

It's so good for so long that it's a shame it slips into a courtroom scenario to tie the whole thing up.
