If this film is to be Loach's swansong, it's a good one to play out on. While the film may have over romanticised the Irish worker and the country at the time, and have had a somewhat uneven pace, Loach's portrayal of the relationship between the State and the Catholic Church hit the nail on the head, and was incredibly accurate in terms of marking the rise of O'Duffy and De V within FG & FF respectively, and the effect this had on the more conservative Irish middle classes. The message of this film is one of tragic irony: the Irish people were more oppressed under FG/FF than they were under their original British oppressors!

Getting passed Ken Loach's less than impartial history lesson, the film is beautifully shot but rather confused and confusing. There was no real sense of just how powerful the Church was at that time, it seemed more to be two men feuding with each other. The scene of finding young people dancing at the roadside was exactly what Dev. had said he wanted Ireland to get back to, but somehow we had the impression this was anti-establishment. By the end of the film I couldn't tell if Gralton or O'Keefe were IRA (or both).

Ken Loach returns to Ireland for third time and 'Jimmy's Hall' could act as a sequel of sorts to his 2007 film 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley'. Jim Norton is magnificent and is a bigger cunt than 'Father Ted's' Bishop Brennan. Barry Ward is solid in the lead and ones blood does boil as we witness the early years and what was to become of de Valera's Ireland.

While it may feel uneven and over-crowded, Jimmy's Hall still offers a fun, rich, and mesmerizing depression drama from direction Ken Loach.
