Rarely does a movie feel as leaden-footed as Iris, especially when it tries to bounce back and forth. The audience is transported between two very obvious stories and becomes slightly irritated by the grinding inevitability of both of them. As a result, Iris Murdoch gets lost in the shuffle.

What a strangely pointless film !……so shallow….so bored with its material and so boring to watch - a kind of Dutiful Exercise for everyone involved....Tiresome one-note performances wedded to tedious one-note direction. Rarely have I watched a film script and a ham-fisted directorial touch produce a work that so totally abandoned the characters ! They are depicted here with something like complete indifference. They bore us and ultimately seem almost ridiculous and pathetic..... The only thing this movie has going for it is snob appeal....but that - sad to say- is almost always enough to "wow" the critics.

It's a great achievement, quiet enough to allow room for her excellent supporting cast -- but strong enough to be felt over James Horner's omnipresent, typically overbearing score.
