Schoolteacher Bertram Cates is arrested for teaching his students Darwin's theory of evolution. The case receives national attention and one of the newspaper reporters, E.K. Hornbeck, arranges to bring in renowned defense attorney and atheist Henry Drummond to defend Cates. The prosecutor, Matthew Brady is a former presidential candidate, famous evangelist, and old adversary of Drummond.

The three central performances here, by Spencer Tracy, Fredric March and Gene Kelly, provide some of the most wonderful acting i've ever experienced. Combine that with typical Stanley Kramer direction and a script that still sparks with fire and you have a wonderful, timely film. The courtroom debates between Tracy and March are a thing to behold.

This film was as good as the play and almost as good as the story its based on. Gene Kelly did a great job on his part!

I love this film!! Based on a play about the Scopes Monkey Trial, and quite thought provoking. Great acting, the power behind Spencer Tracy's performance was just phenomenal. Showcases the sometimes destructive intolerance of religious zealots, and the fight for freedom of thought. The back-and-forth arguments between creationism and evolution gripped my interest, especially since it is still an issue present today. I love court movies, and this one is no different :)

The court scenes were written superbly. To think that this was made nearly 50 years ago begs the question: Why is the film still relevant?
