Schoolteacher Bertram Cates is arrested for teaching his students Darwin's theory of evolution. The case receives national attention and one of the newspaper reporters, E.K. Hornbeck, arranges to bring in renowned defense attorney and atheist Henry Drummond to defend Cates. The prosecutor, Matthew Brady is a former presidential candidate, famous evangelist, and old adversary of Drummond.

A terrific movie and one of the heaviest personal relationship movies you'll ever see.

Not only is it one of the most fun shows to perform, it's also one of the best movies to watch. Two of my acting idols, the always great Spencer Tracy, and the wonderfully versatile Fredric March duel over Evolution in this courtroom drama based on history. Tracy, a liberal attorney defends a schoolteacher who taught evolution against prosecutor former Sec of State, thrice unsucessful Presidential candidate, March (Whose roles are inspired by Darrow and Bryan). Pittsburgh dancer Gene Kelly really turns on his acting ability as cynical newsman EK Hornbeck (Real life counterpart, Mencken) See this film!!!

Even though it plays a little loose with the facts, this film is a triumph of acting, directing, and writing. Frederic March is top-shelf as the blowhard Matthew Harrison Brady, and Spencer Tracy is just as good as his liberal counterpart. Outstanding film!

If I could only ever own three films, this would be the first one I would pick. Many reviews point to Tracy and March carrying the film because without them there wouldn't be much left, but the rhetoric between Tracy and Gene Kelly [Hornbeck] is exceptional.
