A propaganda piece by the British during WWII, directed by David Lean and Noel Coward. For such a large piece of work, it's amazing that for these 2, it was for both their first time to direct anything in film. Pretty big risk being taken by the Brits to finance and support something so ambitious, recalling what RKO did with Orson Welles a year prior. It's still a magnificent film in its own right, not just about the war and fighting the enemy, but more about the individuals involved and their personal and naval lives intertwining to both bitter ends and happiness. Sadly, Coward never directed another film after this, but Lean of course went on to a bigger and more epic career.

A lot of the film is standard wartime propaganda stuff, however Coward's screenplay still manages to find moments of serious humanity in the central characters.

A British WWII with the stiffest upper lip I've ever experienced. Enjoyable yet perfunctory. Noel Coward is wonderful but terrifically miscast. A modest start for David Lean.

wow umn just seen this movie 4 the 1st time n think that this is a good movie 2 watch......its got a good cast of actors/actressess throughout this movie.,....i think that noel coward, john mills, bernard miles,celia johnson play good roles/parts thorughout this movie.....i think that the director of this classics/drama movie had done a good job of directing this movie because you never know what 2 expect thorughout this movie......i think that this is a great war movie 2 watch with a good cast thorughout this movie....i think that this is a really well filmed drama movie 2 watch with a good cast throughout this movie its a great war movie 2 watch
