If you want to read the history, you have to get the feel for it. This film, for all the faults of propaganda, gives a background to the statistics of that period. More to the point, for all of us who have served, it remains an evocative memorial to the ethos of serving the flag.

A lot of the film is standard wartime propaganda stuff, however Coward's screenplay still manages to find moments of serious humanity in the central characters.

My favourite war film, and one of my favourites all time. It has SO much in it apart from what you initially see. This is Noel Cowards cinematic masterpiece, and gave David Lean his first big break as co-director. The film is totally heartfelt -but it is also moving, entertaining and touching.

One of the best wartime propaganda films I've seen - brilliantly written, performed and co-directed (with the estimable David Lean of all people) by Noel Coward. It's realistic, it's tragic, it's sincere, it's uplifting and it's inspiring. It must have been everything a wartime audience would have desired in a film about their troubled times.
