Early film noir murder-mystery with overzealous police chief desperately trying to pin a murder on a promoter. For a boxing promoter, this guy really gets bad seats. All details of the police investigation are immediately leaked to the papers.

A promoter (Victor Mature) takes it upon himself to turn a nobody of a girl into a celebrity. When she's offered a movie contract and is about to leave for Hollywood, she's found murdered and the promoter becomes the prime suspect. However, the detective assigned to the case (a creepy Laird Cregar) is strangely obsessed about it, and the murdered girl's sister thinks she's seen the detective somewhere before... This is an odd film that veers from almost romantic comedy to proto-typical noir, but Mature and Betty Grable (both playing against character) send out sparks whenever they share a scene, and the harsh black and white photography is stunning.

Great little film noir with big dose of creepiness at it's end. The score, with it's constant variations on "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is a bit annoying, but otherwise a great film.

Often considered the first of the classic film noir canon, it is indeed a very nifty, very clever mystery that plays with our expectations in its use of light-hearted tone contrasted deftly with the sharp angles, smoke-filled beams from low-placed lamps and bold fedora-wearing shadows on the walls. The casting is a delicate balance that works, and so is the plot. Its ultimate surprises are easily foreseen because of the sheer amount of formula films in its wake, and yet those revelations still turn out to be more complex than we expect.
