Laney is an attractive, intelligent suburban wife and devoted mother of two adorable children. She has the perfect husband who plays basketball with the kids in the driveway, a pristine house, and a shiny SUV for carting the children to their next activity. However, just beneath the façade lie depression and disillusionment that send her careening into a secret world of reckless compulsion. Only very real danger will force her to face the painful root of her destructiveness and its crumbling effect on those she loves.

Sarah Silverman burns through the indie drama “I Smile Back” without making the slightest move to gain our sympathy.

The movie improves on Koppelman’s ungainly novel but is generally dreary and light on insight. Director Adam Salky steers clear of the usual addiction-movie clichés, but he doesn’t have anything to replace them with, so it’s as if all the connective tissue is gone.

Sarah Silverman does a very good job in this film. Her character is in pretty much every scene and she credibly portrays a woman battling mental illness, substance abuse and promiscuity issues. The script is the real problem here. While it covers ground, it does not do so in any way that is novel. The complaints from people about how awful or terrible the content is are both pollyannish and naive. There are people who have these issues. They exist. They are not evil. They are broken. Nobody could have done better in this part. I may be biased because I love Sarah Silverman as a comic. But that does not make it a good movie. Because it is simply an ok movie with a very good performance.

A day in a life of a Long Island soccer mom who needs something to do - so she drinks, does drugs, and sleeps with other men. There was no point to that movie. Its a story that's been told a thousand times, the only difference is the other stories had better plots, climaxes, and direction.
