I Smile Back (2015)

Laney is an attractive, intelligent suburban wife and devoted mother of two adorable children. She has the perfect husband who plays basketball with the kids in the driveway, a pristine house, and a shiny SUV for carting the children to their next activity. However, just beneath the façade lie depression and disillusionment that send her careening into a secret world of reckless compulsion. Only very real danger will force her to face the painful root of her destructiveness and its crumbling effect on those she loves.

Wow, Silverman brings an A-game performance. A mother with drug, alcohol and sex addictions begins to spiral towards the destruction of her marriage. Heavy subject with wonderful odds at stake. See this!

As studies in female depression go, I Smile Back is less satisfying as a cohesive film than the recent Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter, but Silverman's vanity-free performance is a treasure in its own right.

An incredibly moving, skillfully executed film. Beautifully acted and directed. It was deeply moving.

Richard Roeper 05 Nov 2015

Director Adam Salky wisely allows the writing and the performances to do the heavy lifting, using his camera in a decidedly low-key, indie style without drawing too much attention to stylistic flourishes.

Michael Phillips 05 Nov 2015

While it's a cliche to praise a performance requiring some harsh, fairly explicit on-screen behavior and interactions, Silverman's doing the opposite of grandstanding here.
