A mis-cast Hackman stars in this so-so drama about a man's love-hate affair with his cantankerous and annoying father. Its a plodding, made-for-theatre affair with some OK acting, bogged down by its domestic structure and setting. However, its Douglas' show all the way and the rest of the cast can do little else but let the old guy blow the rest of them off screen. If you're a fan of Hackman's muscular but emotional style, this is not one for you.

Dialogue driven film starring Gene Hackman as a son who has a hard time communicating with his father Melvyn Douglas. Hackman and Douglas are great together (however I'm wondering why Douglas was nominated for Lead and Hackman for Supporting) and Estelle Parsons aslo gave a great performance as Hackman's sister. A sad film, particularly the moment in the funeral home where they have to pick a casket. And the final segment is acting at its finest.

a masterpiece. good to see a movie can be done, without ruining the integrity of the play it's based upon

Saw about a third of this movie. Strong performances.

These bare bones of plot hardly give any hint of the power of this film.
