I Dream in Another Language (2017)

An indigenous language is in peril, as its last two speakers had a quarrel in the past and haven't spoken to each other in over 50 years. I was lucky to catch this film at the Frameline Festival in San Francisco. Its beautiful cinematography and complex characters make the film relatable and engaging. The story of a dying language is the backdrop for an examination of regret and loneliness. There's a lot of humor and magical realism that lightens the heavy topics of repressed desires and broken relationships.

Visually stunning and emotionally complex, "I Dream in Another Language" blends fantasy, gritty reality, and heartfelt humor into an enthralling film about the importance of accepting our stories, honoring our connections, and striving to keep them both alive.

This tale of a young linguist seeking to keep a dying language alive is thought-provoking, visually compelling, and hopefully will help to raise awareness about this indirect form of cultural destruction. But its themes are subordinated to surprisingly bland treatment

Much of the movie’s success stems from Contreras, his regular cinematographer Tonatiuh Martínez and the rest of the technical team’s handling of its spiritual musings, with a beguiling mood as crucial as the underlying backstory.
