It's as if two completely different movies got spliced together in the editing room, or in the projection booth.

This film is really difficult to judge. It's so slow and difficult to watch, and it's not that it's even rewarding when you're all said and done with it. But there are such moments of pure brilliance alongside some of the most gorgeous cinematography I've ever seen, especially in the second half. How do you approach this? It's tough; it's not my thing; it's really good; it's unique.

Keng, a young soldier, patrolling the jungle outside a local Thai village falls in love with Tong, a local country boy. Weerasenthakul?s camera has an affinity for capturing gestures that take place within the moments that make up each event, a perceptive quality that he combines with his magical fascination for the ordinary. The end result creates an atmosphere both entrancingly dream-like and unsettlingly nightmarish.
