House of Dracula (1945)

A scientist working on cures for rare afflictions, such as a bone softening agent made from molds to allow him to correct the spinal deformity of his nurse, finds the physical causes of lycanthropy in wolf-man Larry Talbot and of vampirism in Count Dracula, but himself becomes afflicted with homicidal madness while exchanging blood with Dracula.

Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein (sort of) for an all out throwdown...not really. A monster mash is what you get when you get the House of Dracula. You get Lon Chaney, Jr. returning as the Wolf Man but a couple of new people standing in as Dracula and Frankenstein's monster. The movie doesn't have much of a plot and Frankenstein is really just crammed in there (not exactly sure why). Hey at least the tortured Wolf Man finds some relief.

House of Frankenstein was two movies smashed together...a random pointless Dracula story, followed by a bad sequel to "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man"...this time it at least has only one plot line, concerning all these monsters ending up at a Mad Doctor's castle for his help. Well Dracula and the Wolf Man come...the Monster just happens to be buried underneath for some odd reason. Despite the more consistent plot and a bit more Dracula...it still pretty much sucks. You want Lugosi, and Caradine, while not really terrible...is just no Lugosi. The pretty lady hunchback is about the only interesting twist this film has. Mostly it is more of the same from the previous Universal Monster Mish Mash. It was sort of the closure of the original run of the Universal Monsters. Many would return in the Abbott & Costello comedies, but this was their last true horror film.

A female hunchback? What next, gay cowboys? Probably the first movie to try to explain lycanthropy and vampirism 'scientifically'. Apparently Dracula suffers from a rare blood disease and the Wolf Man has a combination of glandular malfunction and self-hypnosis. Pardon me, but I don't think a hyperactive pituitary can make a man turn into a wolf-man-hybrid within 30 seconds of exposure to moonlight, nor that a blood disorder could give a corpse the strength of ten men and the ability to turn into a bat. You can't explain the supernatural scientifically-- well, except for zombies (check out "The Serpent and the Rainbow" for more information). Did this lay the foundations for UNDERWORLD? Well... probably not.
