Nice MGM musical, but second rate for them. Very colorful, a few good musical numbers but nothing outstanding. Fine but unimpressive cast, routine all the way.

While not in the same league as the classic MGM musicals, Hit the Deck is not without charm. There's a bevy of stars, most of them minor, a few exceptional singers, and a couple of fun dance sequences with Russ Tamblyn. You could do worse.

Colorful musical with lots of talent involved, if only the script was better this would have been more memorable.

Great Musical! This was the first golden era musical that I saw that was not considered a classic. So I have a lot of respect for it. The plot is nothing special. There are movies that came before it with the same idea of three sailors, on leave, meeting three beautiful women. But I think this has better motive and a better cast. To begin with: Jane Powell( one of my favorites), Vic Damone (who doesn't get enough credit), Russ Tamblyn, Debbie Reynolds, and Ann Miller. See! Right there, you're already blown away!The costumes are gorgeous and the dancing is creatively meshed. I just love it!!

For some odd reason, MGM chose this adaptation of the 1927 stage hit as its final "all-star" musical - only Vic Damone, Russ Tamblyn and Debbie Reynolds would return to the studio for musical roles in the following years. Despite a melodic score ("Hallelujah," "More Than You Know," "I Know That You Know," "Sometimes I'm Happy"), the plot is bland.
